Professional Goals
While working with “North Magazine,” I was given an abundance of opportunities. From the beginning, I was constantly driving all over Fishers and Carmel to meet with clients and prospective clients to discuss the magazine. I learned how to navigate the area a lot quicker than I had thought would be possible. One project I was given took place in downtown Carmel, so I was given the chance to meet several of the shop owners in the Arts and Design District. In doing this, I learned what kind of people would be interested in not only reading the magazine, but advertising with the magazine as well.
From the beginning I had a positive outlook on how the internship would work out. Little did I know how much advertising and public relations could be intertwined in certain circumstances. After setting up several appointments with business owners at a variety of businesses, I was constantly reminded how people are different in so many ways. The one way to have a good start with someone you have just met is to show them positivity. This benefited me each day I met a new individual.
Academic Goals
I can honestly say that there was not a moment in my internship where I felt like my education at Ball State did not play some role. When I was told to set up appointments with businesses, I had to practice my communication and presentation skills. When I wrote emails and sent them to a mass amount of businesses, I practiced my writing skills. The “being professional” practice was on at all times. When I look back at the classes I have taken so far, I realize they were well put together building blocks for the future and what is to come. Not only is school about constantly learning, but that was what I saw in my internship as well. No day and no person is the same as another, so the future will continue to teach me new lessons.
One day I took part in a meeting where we looked over the magazine layout before it was printed. I was able to assist in looking for grammar and design errors in the pages. It was nice to be able to contribute in a way I knew would be beneficial to the rest of the staff.
Personal Goals
One of my goals had been to take advantage of being in Indianapolis and learn more about the city. I feel that this was definitely accomplished because I have been able to build relationships with a lot of the business owners through working with the magazine and setting up meetings. Therefore, my confidence level for trying new places in Indianapolis has also been boosted.
I have absolutely loved being in a journalism atmosphere for the summer and the fact that it was based around a magazine was the cherry on top. Since working with the internship, I have decided to start freelance writing. I have already contacted a couple of publications in which I am going to start sending pieces. Another main goal for myself is to continue to build onto my journalism skills. It is something that I want to incorporate into my life from here on out.
I believe that this internship has helped me grow as a person. It was my first experience in a “real work” setting and I’m glad I was able to get a taste before graduating college. I now have an idea of what is expected of a professional and how to learn from each situation I am given.
I am sad that it is now over, but it gives me something to look forward to in the future. I now know that it is possible to find a career in which I can enjoy, which is an important factor for me.
Diversity Issues
I truly enjoy meeting and getting to know new people. With being in Carmel so much, I kind of went in thinking I had an idea of how people were going to act. I was worried that with Carmel being a wealthy community that that would somehow be displayed in each individual’s behavior. Fortunately, this was not the case. More than not I was treated very kindly and it was easy to have a conversation with most of the business owners.
My supervisor told me ways I could deal with people that were not so friendly at first. It was nice of her to give me helpful hints when it came to stressful situations.
I am overly thankful that my internship was a positive experience. The learning will never end.
